Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has accused Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike of pledging to “hold the PDP” in support of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, a revelation he says explains the rift between them despite their past alliance in the G5 governors group.

Speaking in a media chat with select platforms, Makinde recounted a private meeting with Tinubu, Wike, and others where Wike allegedly volunteered to align the PDP with Tinubu’s re-election plans. “I was in a meeting with President Tinubu, Nyesom Wike, and others when Wike volunteered to hold the PDP for Tinubu against 2027, and I was in shock… Wike can support the president in 2027, but I will not,” Makinde said.

The governor reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning against the dangers of a one-party state and criticising mass defections to the ruling APC as undermining Nigeria’s democracy.

He also reflected on his business background, claiming he made a $1 million profit at age 29 in 1997 from a Mobil contract, and rejected Tinubu’s political maneuvers in Oyo, including attempts to push him toward leading the APC in the state.

Makinde’s remarks highlight deepening fractures within the PDP as speculation intensifies over alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
